micronesia palau under water-005_edited.jpg

In 1985, we visited Micronesia for the first time. The beauty of Chuuk Islands (then known as the Truk Islands) with its Blue Lagoon and uninhabited islands, and the mystique of the Eco-Hotel "The Village" nestled in the tropical jungle highlands of Pohnpei Island (then known as Ponape), along with the enigma of the colossal stone ruins of Nan Madol, left us spellbound.

As if enchanted by the magic of the southern islands, we learned diving in Palau and embarked on island journeys to Yap, Kosrae, the Marshall Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. These travels significantly transformed our lives, leading us to work in travel magazines, in-flight magazines, diving, and specialized cruising publications.

The more we delved into the lives of islanders, their cultures, and the underwater world, the more fascinating, infinite, and boundless it seemed to be (laughs). The peculiarities and similarities among the islands of Oceania (Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia) urged us further, leading to over two decades of frequent visits to the islands across the Pacific.

Micronesia remains the cornerstone of southern island experiences for us. Our desire to introduce the warm and generous lifestyles of the people, as well as their proud traditional cultures, was fulfilled when we published the cultural guidebook "Micronesia: Discovering the True Faces of the Small Islands."

As a result, this website reconstructs the content of "World Cultural Guide 13: Micronesia - Discovering the True Faces of the 'Small Islands,'" originally published in 1999 by Travel Journal Co., Ltd., with a more visual approach.

Particularly focusing on Palau, Yap, and Kosrae, we've significantly expanded unpublished photographs and insights, converting monochrome images into color, offering explanations for each shot to make the natural landscapes, folk culture, culinary traditions, underwater sceneries, and connections with Japan more accessible and enjoyable, even for those viewing these pictures for the first time.

Additionally, we've included an unpublished fiction story titled "Mari-chan of Palau" centered on the Palau Islands. Moving forward, we aim to gradually introduce, through this current website, stock photos gathered over 20 years, focusing on Micronesia and the islands across the Pacific (Polynesia, Melanesia, the Southwest Islands of Okinawa), striving to create a worldview of these islands.

Through this website, we hope you can sense the broad smiles of the generous people living on islands scattered like stars across vast oceans, feel the gentle ambiance of the southern islands, and grasp the various traditional cultures thriving on each island.
