Chapter 1 micronesian

Island Smile

Micronesia is suited for journeys that empty the mind. The smiles and kindness of the islanders generously provide nourishment for our hearts when we visit. I believe that is the greatest charm and treasure of these southern islands. If one can grasp even a little of the 'island society' behind the backdrop of people's selfless smiles, the deep connection between Micronesia and Japan becomes visible.

If you head further south from Okinawa, you'll arrive at the gateway to Micronesia, Guam. Flying north from Guam takes you to the Northern Mariana Islands, including Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. To the west lie Yap and Palau. Heading east leads to Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, and the Marshall Islands, all of which form a patchwork of small islands spread across the North Pacific, known as Micronesia, the backdrop of this website.

What makes Micronesia appealing is the scattered nature of these small islands, each possessing similar yet distinct cultures. Within their shared foods, island-specific rules and cuisines have emerged, passed down through generations. Similar yet different, evolving uniquely from the same roots... It's this complexity that draws us in. The more we learn, the more enchanting it becomes. Researching stirs curiosity, becoming addictive despite its intricacies. That's what Micronesia is about.

Throughout history, ethnic groups moved from island to island, contributing to the evolution of cultures. It could be in cooking methods, tangible cultures like dances, or intangible ones transmitted orally. Above all, we aim to introduce these through the smiles of the many islanders who have shared their knowledge.
